The European Union is preparing to impose new sanctions on Iran in response to its provision of ballistic missiles to Russia, which are being used in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

This decision comes as EU foreign ministers convene in Luxembourg to address increasing conflicts in the Middle East and continue efforts to support Ukraine, despite resistance from Hungary.

The sanctions, expected to be approved shortly, will target Iranian companies and individuals connected to the country's ballistic missile program and its shipments of weapons to Russia.

Iran’s national airline, Iran Air, is among the organizations facing these sanctions, and Germany and France have already targeted it.

Iran has rejected these allegations, insisting that it does not send ballistic missiles to Russia. However, the EU remains committed to moving forward with sanctions, citing Iran’s involvement in supporting Russia's military activities in Ukraine.

This move aligns with the EU's broader strategy to curb both Russian aggression in Ukraine and the influence of its international allies.

In addition to addressing Iran's role in the Ukraine conflict, the meeting in Luxembourg will also focus on Tehran’s involvement in the Middle East, particularly its support for regional militias such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.
