The European Union has announced plans to impose new sanctions on Iran, citing concerns over the violent suppression of ongoing protests.

EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said the bloc is prepared to propose additional and tougher restrictive measures in response to what it described as the forceful crackdown on demonstrators.

The announcement comes as tensions continue to rise inside Iran, where widespread protests have persisted in recent weeks. European officials have repeatedly criticized Tehran’s handling of the unrest, warning that further violations could trigger expanded punitive action.

Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported that thousands of people gathered on Monday in a central square in Tehran in a demonstration supporting the authorities. The rally also served as a memorial for members of Iran’s security forces who were killed during the protests.

Footage broadcast by state media showed large crowds attending the gathering, highlighting the deep divisions within Iranian society as the unrest continues.

The prospect of new EU sanctions underscores growing international pressure on Tehran, as Western governments weigh further diplomatic and economic responses to developments on the ground in Iran.
