EU expresses readiness to impose sanctions on Niger, backing efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore democracy.

In a statement released on Sunday, the EU has expressed its full support for the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and is prepared to aid these efforts by imposing individual sanctions.

The Union condemned the unlawful detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family, expressing concern over the deteriorating conditions of his detention and calling for his release, as per the statement.

The EU has reiterated its call for a return to constitutional order, applauding the decisions of the heads of state of ECOWAS member countries. It emphasizes its commitment to pursuing diplomatic solutions to resolve the crisis, according to the statement.

It is worth noting that military personnel within the Nigerien army announced on Thursday, July 27, via state television, the ousting of the country's President, Mohamed Bazoum.

They confirmed his confinement to his residence, the closure of borders, and the imposition of a curfew. They stated that they have decided to put an end to the current regime due to the deteriorating security situation and economic mismanagement in the country.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Ali Touré, declared last Thursday that "the group has instructed the Chiefs of Defense Staff in its member countries to immediately activate their reserve forces."

This move was made amid uncertainty regarding the situation in Niger following the recent military rebellion.

ECOWAS has also announced sanctions against Niger, including the closure of its member states' airspace to Niger and the suspension of trade exchanges. These actions come in response to the military assuming power and the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum.
