The European Union has confirmed its commitment to allocate €200 million in support of the Lebanese Army, reinforcing its long-standing dedication to stability in Lebanon and the broader Middle East region.
This announcement came from Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, during his visit to Beirut on Sunday.
Borrell outlined the EU's strong support for Lebanon’s people, military, and institutions, confirming that the Union is ready to provide both financial assistance and technical expertise.
He emphasized the EU’s determination to stand alongside Lebanon as it faces significant challenges, particularly in the context of growing regional instability.
During his discussions with Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati, Borrell explored ways in which the EU could offer practical assistance, focusing not only on financial aid but also on providing technical support.
He underlined the importance of Lebanon's role in the broader geopolitical landscape and pointed out that the situation in the region poses a serious test for the international community’s ability to bring about peace.
The EU also voiced its concern over the increasing global implications of the conflict, noting that the international community must not remain passive in the face of escalating tensions.
The EU has called for a swift and comprehensive ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, urging both sides to adhere to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which aims to resolve the ongoing conflict.
The EU has expressed strong backing for current peace proposals in the region and reiterated its commitment to supporting Lebanon politically, economically, and militarily.
Mikati acknowledged the crucial role of European support in helping Lebanon navigate the complexities of the regional crisis.
