European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Saturday that the European Union stands with the Venezuelan people and supports a peaceful and democratic transition in the country.
"We are closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela. We stand with the people of Venezuela and support a peaceful and democratic transition. Any solution must respect international law and the UN Charter," Von der Leyen added in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Similarly, European Council President António Costa stated on Saturday that the bloc calls for calm in Venezuela and supports a peaceful and democratic resolution in the country.
Costa wrote in a post on the X platform: "I am following the situation in Venezuela with grave concern. The EU calls for calm and for a solution based on full respect for international law and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter."
Earlier today, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that "the United States has successfully launched extensive strikes on Venezuela." Trump stated that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been "captured and airlifted out of Venezuela," emphasizing that the arrest was carried out in coordination with U.S. law enforcement agencies.
