Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, held a high-level discussion on Saturday to address escalating regional instability and the evolving threat of ISIS in Syria.

In a phone call detailed by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, both officials reviewed the "distinguished relations" between Baghdad and the European Union, exploring new avenues for cooperation across various sectors of mutual interest.

The Syrian Crisis and Security Risks

A primary focus of the talks was the deteriorating security situation in Syria. The two diplomats exchanged views on recent clashes in various Syrian regions and the status of fragile political agreements. Of particular concern was the security of prisons holding ISIS militants. Following reports of several extremists escaping from facilities previously under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), both parties emphasized the urgent need for a sustained ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to ongoing disputes in the Al-Hasakah region.

Shared Responsibility for Global Security

During the call, High Representative Kallas expressed the EU’s gratitude for Iraq’s preliminary agreement to repatriate Iraqi nationals. However, Foreign Minister Hussein sent a firm message to the international community, asserting that the "security and financial burdens of managing the ISIS file should not be borne by Iraq alone." He emphasized that the responsibility for handling these global threats rests on all involved nations.

A Call for European Mediation

The discussions also highlighted the need for a more active European role in mediating talks between the SDF and the Syrian government. Baghdad believes that European diplomatic weight could help secure clear, binding agreements to stabilize the region.

The call concluded with Minister Hussein briefing Kallas on his recent diplomatic mission to Iran, providing a broader context of Iraq's efforts to de-escalate tensions in an increasingly "dangerous regional environment."
