European Union (EU) foreign ministers convene later in Brussels on Monday to give formal approval to new sanctions against Iran and a new bloc monitoring mission to Armenia and Azerbaijan.

EU diplomats confirmed to the German News Agency (dpa) that more than 36 Iranian individuals and organizations will be targeted in response to grave human rights violations.

Tehran has cracked down on the demonstrations, including recent executions of protesters, triggered by the death in police custody of an Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, after her arrest for allegedly violating strict Islamic dress codes.

The sanctions decision comes at a time when the member states of the European Union are discussing the inclusion of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the list of terrorism within the bloc, which represents a legal challenge.
