The European Union has strongly condemned Hamas for refusing to extend the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. The bloc also expressed concerns over Israel's subsequent decision to block humanitarian aid from entering the territory, warning of potential humanitarian consequences.

In a statement, the EU urged both sides to swiftly return to negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire and reaffirmed its strong support for ongoing mediation efforts. A permanent ceasefire, the statement noted, would facilitate the release of all remaining Israeli hostages while enabling Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction to begin.

Reiterating its stance on humanitarian aid, the EU called for “full, rapid, safe, and unhindered access” to assistance for Palestinians in need. The bloc also urged all parties to allow humanitarian workers and international organizations to operate safely and effectively within Gaza.

The European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM Rafah), which oversees operations at the Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt, has played a crucial role in facilitating movement across the border. Since February 1, nearly 3,000 people have crossed into Egypt thanks to the mission’s efforts. The EU reaffirmed its readiness to continue supporting border operations if requested by the involved parties.
