Al-Azhar Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed El-Tayyib has expressed his thanks and deep gratitude for President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on sponsoring “Al-Azhar International Conference on the Renewal of Islamic Thought”.

The conference activities took place on January 27-28, 2020.

In an official statement, El-Tayyib praised Sisi's word before the gathering, delivered on his behalf by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.

It is worth mentioning that, Al-Azhar Grand Imam gave his closing statement yesterday before the conference.

In his word, El-Tayyib affirmed that this conference is not a typical one, yet it aims at outlining strategic mechanisms for a number of specific issues.

The conference was attended by a number of top leaders; prominent political and religious figures; and representatives of the Awqaf (Endowments) Ministry; Dar Al-Iftaa, Egypt’s religious authority authorized with issuing religious fatwas (opinions); and Islamic councils from 41 Arab and Islamic countries.

The main themes of the conference include innovation concepts and mechanisms, the dismantling of misconceptions, women's and family issues and the role of international, religious and academic institutions in renewing Islamic thought.

The Egyptian President has repeatedly stressed in recent years the importance of having balanced religious discourse to confront extremism and radical ideology, blaming outdated religious discourse for holding Egypt back, and often calling on Islamic clerics to reform their religious speech to confront extremist ideology.
