The Egyptian Minister of Social Solidarity Nivine El Kabbag launched on Thursday a program entitled "Awareness" for community development.

In her statement, the minister said that the program aims to get rid of negative societal behaviors that impede human and economic development, by supplying citizens with documented scientific, legal and religious knowledge.

“The program will address 12 societal issues, including the economic empowerment, education, knowledge and literacy, maternal and child health, positive parenting issues, early diagnosis of disability, illegal immigration, population growth, female circumcision, child marriage, hygiene and public health, drug control, citizenship and respect for religious and cultural persity.” El Kabbag added.

She confirmed that this program is a new initiative for enhancing sustainable development, economic empowerment and investment in people, especially as the social solidarity ministry addresses material and intellectual poverty.

The minister pointed out that the program's general objective is to create positive societal values, attitudes, and behaviors that improve the quality of life for all family members and move out of poverty.

El-Kabbag added that the program’s beneficiaries are the families that benefit from "Takaful" and “Karama” programs that include 3 million families (15 million Egyptian citizens).

She added that those who are benefiting from the women’s programs and Haya Karima (Decent Life) initiative, in addition to the beneficiaries of the ministry’s various societal programs will also benefit from the recently- launched program.

The minister stressed that the program's operational mechanisms are based on 3 directions- first of which is the positive societal communication through various mass media outlets.

She added that the second direction is based on incorporating the new program’s messages into the previous social protection programs such as the Takaful and Karama programs, 2 Kefaya (Two children are enough) initiative, combating addiction and supporting for persons with disabilities programs.

Meanwhile, the third direction is to activate the enforcement of policies, procedures, and laws supporting for social change.

On her part, Randa Abu Al-Hassan, the representative of the United Nations Development Program in Egypt, praised the new social protection program that proves the close cooperation between the Ministry of Social Solidarity and the United Nations, noting that Egypt is working to relieve the suffering of the poor families.
