On Monday, Egypt's Prime Minister Dr. Mustafa Madbouly sent a cable of congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on his election as President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In a letter, the Prime Minister said: "On my own behalf and on behalf of the Government of Egypt, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Your Highness on gaining the confidence of the Supreme Council of the Union of the Arab Emirates, and on your unanimous election as President of the UAE, succeeding the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

He added," I take this opportunity to renew our appreciation and pride in the fraternal and historical relations linking Egypt and the UAE, and we are confident that they will witness further strengthening of cooperation in various fields during your reign."

The Prime Minister wished success to the new Emirati president, encouraging him to “continue the path of development and prosperity for the Gulf country as well as complementing the rational policies and prosperity attained by the country’s former presidents Sheikh Khalifa and Sheikh Zayed.”

Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, who is now the third president of the UAE, served as the crown prince of Abu Dhabi since 2004.

Notably, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi headed to Abu Dhabi on Saturday to offer his condolences over the death of Sheikh Khalifa, who died on Friday at the age of 73.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan served as the second president of the UAE and the 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi since 2004.

Egypt declared a three-day mourning period in honour of the departed president.
