Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, inspected the early-stage construction works of the Soda Ash and Derivatives Production Complex, a major project of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM), located in the industrial zone of New Alamein City.

During his visit, the minister witnessed the launch of preliminary works at the site, marking a key milestone for what he described as a strategic industrial project that will significantly strengthen Egypt’s economy.

Badawi emphasized the project’s importance, noting that soda ash (sodium carbonate) is a critical input in several major industries, including glass manufacturing, detergents, and various chemical sectors. By establishing a domestic production hub, Egypt aims to replace a large portion of its imported needs, reducing the import bill and boosting industrial self-sufficiency.

The minister confirmed that the project enjoys full support and continuous follow-up from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, given its role in localizing high-value chemical industries.

The complex is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 600,000 tons in its first phase. Badawi noted that the project will also maximize the use of Egypt’s mineral wealth, particularly limestone, the primary raw material for soda ash production, aligning with the ministry’s broader strategy to channel mining resources into value-added industrial projects rather than exporting them as raw materials.

During the field tour, Badawi received a detailed briefing from Ibrahim Meki, Chairman of ECHEM, and Dr. Shahir Reda, Chairman of the Egyptian Soda Ash Company (ESAC).

They outlined the work progress, project scope, and implementation plan agreed upon with the general contractor, TCC of China.
