On Monday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel Atty met with Niels Annen, Germany’s State Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, in Cairo. Annen’s visit comes as he prepares to attend the 12th World Urban Forum, set to take place in Cairo from November 4 to 8.
During the meeting, Abdel Atty emphasized the significance of Germany as one of Egypt’s most important partners in both economic and development fields. He praised the strong Egyptian-German relationship across various sectors, including politics, economics, and culture, highlighting the contributions of German companies in Egypt’s national projects. Abdel Atty underscored Egypt’s desire to strengthen these ties further, particularly in areas like renewable energy, vocational training, skilled labor mobility, and education.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister also conveyed hopes for Germany’s support within the European Union to advance Egyptian interests. This includes strengthening the EU-Egypt Partnership and securing EU financial assistance for Egypt’s development goals. He commended Egypt’s efforts to prevent irregular migration to Europe, stressing the importance of creating pathways for skilled Egyptian workers to legally enter the German workforce.
Abdel Atty noted that Egypt is seeking increased German investment in green energy sectors, including green hydrogen and renewable energy, given Egypt’s substantial potential in these fields. He emphasized that enhanced German support could significantly boost Egypt’s economic growth and sustainability efforts.
In addition to bilateral cooperation, the ministers discussed a proposed trilateral partnership to support development projects across Africa. Abdel Atty highlighted the efforts of the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding, suggesting that these institutions could be instrumental in advancing joint development initiatives throughout the continent.
Abdel Atty also took the opportunity to showcase Egypt’s recent progress in urban development, including the construction of new sustainable cities like the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein. He underscored Egypt’s commitment to sustainable urban growth, adding that hosting the World Urban Forum in Cairo reflects the country’s dedication to urban transformation. These efforts, he noted, aim to boost Egypt’s profile as a leader in sustainable and modern infrastructure, with a focus on long-term environmental and economic resilience.
The meeting between the Egyptian and German officials underscores both nations’ shared commitment to strengthening economic, environmental, and developmental collaboration at a time when such partnerships are crucial for regional stability and growth.
