Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and acting Minister of Health Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, met the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ghada Wali on Wednesday to discuss and agree on various cooperation frameworks.

During the meeting, both officials affirmed the importance of enhancing their bilateral cooperation, especially in the health sector, as Egypt aims to eliminate HIV/AIDS and raise awareness against drug abuse and addiction.

In addition to this, Abdel Ghaffar and Wali highlighted some of the current key health challenges that face the country and reviewed how they can conduct comprehensive training for healthcare professionals on human trafficking in light of the consensus of visions between, UNODC and the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), according to a statement released by the UN.

“The frameworks include mechanisms for cooperation to provide further health and psychological support for immigrant and refugee communities in Egypt,” the statement noted.

They also held a discussion on a number of critical challenges in a range of health domains, including prevention and treatment of substance abuse, in particular the “Alternatives to Opioids ” treatment program.
