Navigating cultural and linguistic differences, Egyptians in Germany are committed to preserving their heritage, especially during significant occasions like Eid al-Fitr. This commitment ensures the continuation of Egyptian traditions abroad, fostering a sense of identity and patriotism among the expatriate community.

In a distinctive celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the Egyptian community in Germany gathers to prepare traditional sweets such as Kahk, biscuits, petit fours, and Ghorayeba. These festivities, characterized by a warm family atmosphere, are a testament to the community's efforts to maintain their cultural practices.

Alaa Thabet, the leader of the Egyptian Family House in Berlin, shared that the Family House diligently upholds Egyptian Eid traditions, mirroring the celebrations back home in Egypt. Preparations for Eid among Egyptian women in Germany include not only the culinary traditions of making Kahk and biscuits but also buying new clothes for children and decorating homes to welcome the festive season.

Eid al-Fitr Celebrations

Thabet further explained how Egyptian women in Germany take special care to prepare traditional Eid sweets ahead of the holiday, involving family, friends, and children in the process. This practice not only preserves the rituals of their homeland but also serves as an educational experience for the younger generations, ensuring they remain connected to their roots despite the diaspora.

Eid Prayers in Germany

Highlighting another aspect of their Eid tradition, Thabet mentioned the community's dedication to performing Eid prayers in local Arab mosques. This gathering allows them to recreate the communal spirit of Eid, exchanging greetings and celebrating together, just as they would in Egypt.

Maintaining Traditions Abroad

The effort to maintain Egyptian traditions is a crucial aspect of the expatriate experience, especially during Eid al-Fitr. By observing traditional practices such as the Eid prayer and preparing festive foods, Egyptians abroad ensure that their cultural heritage is passed down to their children, keeping the spirit of their homeland alive in a foreign setting.

Support from the Ministry of Immigration

Ambassador Soha Gendi, Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates' Affairs, actively engages with Egyptian communities worldwide, extending Eid greetings and encouraging them to continue promoting their culture and traditions abroad. She emphasizes the role of Egyptians living overseas as ambassadors of Egypt's rich civilization.

As the Islamic community celebrates Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, these traditions reinforce the bonds among Egyptians, both in their homeland and across the globe, celebrating a festival that has been observed since the second Hijri year.
