Egypt-US Scholars Willing to Serve Egypt's Community Universities

The Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, held talks with about 140 Egyptian professors and researchers at more than 80 prestigious universities and research centers in the US.

The meeting came during the first virtual forum of the Egyptian American Scholars (EAS), which was organized by the Egyptian Cultural Office in Washington, in the presence of Yasser Reda, Egypt's Ambassador to the US, presidents of the new community universities, and Dr. Mohamed Hamza, Egypt's Cultural Adviser in Washington.

At the outset of meeting, Abdel Ghaffar reviewed the new national projects undertaken by the state during the recent period, which led to an increase in the number of public universities to 27, pointing out to the Ministry’s plan to set up at least one university in every governorate in order to reduce the number of alienated students. He indicated that the number of private universities has reached 32.

The minister talked about there are three technological universities, which were opened in the New Cairo, Quesna and Beni Suef, in addition to other six universities, which are being established with a view to providing a new way of learning for students.

Abdel Ghaffar expressed the Ministry's desire to attract foreign universities with very advanced global rankings to establish new branches in Egypt, indicating that there are four branches of foreign universities in the Cairo Administrative Capital.

President's directions

Abdel Ghaffar confirmed that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is keen to provide unprecedented support and facilities to establish more international universities in Egypt.  On their part, the presidents of community universities presented the curricula programs adopted by each university that come in line with the current and future needs to contribute to advancing development.

They also presented future plans that lead to the continued development of the academic and research community in those universities. 59% of the professors expressed their willingness to be 'remotely' among the teaching staffs in the new universities, while 79% of them said that they are ready to give lectures when they come to Egypt.

Scholars to join community universities :

In addition, 87% of those professors expressed their willingness to supervise joint research projects. During the meeting, the Higher Education Minister announced that it was agreed to contract with these professors immediately to take part in the educational process at the new community universities in various majors, such as medicine, engineering, data science, economics, space sciences, agriculture, and science.

At the end of the meeting, the minister thanked all the attendees, stressing the importance of setting timetables in coordination with the supervisors of community universities and the Egyptian scholars abroad to implement the research projects submitted by them.
