Egypt Wins Gold Medal in First Day of African Weighlifting Tournament

Egypt won the women's 49kg gold medal in the first day of the 29th African men's and women's weightlifting championships, which is currently being held from April 23 to 30 at the Cairo International Stadium.

Hiba Saleh won the gold medal in the weight category of 49 kg  with a total of 168 kg, with Ruela Hantaria of Mauritius earning second place 164 kg, and then came Ghana's Nomi in third place with a total of 124 kg.

In the 45 kg category, player Rosina of Madagascar won first place and the gold medal with a total of 150 kg,  Moroccan Maha Fajr El-Eslam came in second place with a total of 112 kg.

The opening ceremony of the African Weightlifting Championship kicked off on Thursday evening, where the winners will earn themselves a place to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

During the ceremony, Dr. Mohammed Al-Kurdi, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports for Sports Performance, welcomed the participants to the tournament.

On his part, Mahmoud Mahgoub, head of the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation, thanked the African Union for its dedication to the tournament, praising the role of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and sponsoring companies in standing behind the Union in order to make the tournament a success.

Khalid Al-Mahalhal, president of the African Weightlifting Federation, expressed his happiness to be present again on the land of Egypt, the cradle of civilization and recognized for its efficiency in the organization of major tournaments.

On his part, Mohamed Gad, Managing Director of Royal Sports Marketing Company, said: " we took the rights of marketing the African Weightlifting Championship and after the success of the first day of the competitions and the opening ceremony which culminated in Egypt 's Heba Saleh winning 3 golds medals, where are thankfull for Egypt's broadcasting stations for standing behind the country's champions.
