Egypt has welcomed the decision by the United States to designate the Muslim Brotherhood organization in Egypt as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity, describing the move as a decisive step that reflects the dangerous nature of the group’s extremist ideology and the serious threat it poses to regional and international security.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, Egypt said the designation underscores the violent foundations of the Muslim Brotherhood and its long-standing involvement in terrorism, incitement, and political exploitation of religion.

Cairo praised the efforts of the U.S. administration, led by Donald Trump, in combating international terrorism and confronting extremist organizations. The statement stressed that the American decision fully aligns with Egypt’s long-established position, which classifies the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization that relies on violence and extremist ideology to pursue political objectives.

Egypt noted that the region has suffered for decades from the actions of the Muslim Brotherhood, which it accused of carrying out terrorist attacks targeting police officers, members of the armed forces, and civilians in an organized attempt to undermine national security and stability.

The statement emphasized that the U.S. designation confirms the correctness of Egypt’s firm stance adopted after the June 30 Revolution in 2013, which aimed to protect the will of the Egyptian people and preserve state institutions. Egypt said the group sought to hijack the state and impose its destructive agenda through violence and terrorism.

Cairo also highlighted the heavy sacrifices made by the Egyptian state in confronting terrorism, describing them as evidence of Egypt’s unwavering commitment to combating extremism and safeguarding national security and state institutions.

Egypt reaffirmed its determination to continue strengthening international cooperation in counterterrorism efforts, including cutting off ideological and financial sources of extremist groups. The statement concluded by stressing Egypt’s readiness to coordinate closely with international partners to combat terrorism in all its forms, in defense of the security and stability of Egypt, the region, and the wider international community.
