 Egypt, UK Cooperate to Support Scientific Research with £50 M

Dr. Khalid Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, has received a report submitted by Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Vice-minister for University Affairs, about the activities of the conference of Newton- Mosharafa Fund.

The conference was launched by the United Kingdom (UK) Embassy in Cairo and the local branch of the British Council (BC).

Jeffery Adams, UK Ambassador to Egypt and Elizabeth White, Principal of the BC attended that conference along with a host of Egyptian and British researchers who has received scholarships financed by the fund.

Dr. Ashour pointed out that Egypt is keen to bolster the cultural and scientific relations with the UK along with supporting the partnership between the research institutions in both the countries.

He added that Newton- Mosharafa program aims at supporting sectors of the scientific research and invention in Egypt and the UK to find joint solutions to the challenges facing Egypt in fields of economic development and social care.

The fund also seeks to upgrade the inpidual capabilities through the international training programs and developing to sustain Egypt’s ability to researching and inventing to attain targets of sustainable development through the industrial application of outputs of the scientific research.

Dr. Ashour went on to say that the fund allots 50 million to support the scientific research within a frame of a protocol of partnership covers seven years.

It plans to develop capabilities of the sciences’ sector, increase scientific research and invention in Egypt, helping in alleviating the social and economic challenges facing Egypt through preparing the new research papers and supporting invention.

The Newton- Mosharafa Fund benefits, within seven years, from advantages in the field of research and invention in the UK to offer support to the capabilities of scientific research in Egypt.

The fund also plans to build partnerships between the scientific institutions in both Egypt and the UK.

It supports scientific research and development in three general categories including human resources through training and exchange experiences.

The fund also sponsors programs of cooperation in topics related to development.

It is also bolstering translation to convey invention from universities to a specific activity.

The Newton- Mosharafa Fund, in cooperation with the Egyptian government, concentrates on five prioritized fields of managing the sustainable water, renewable energy, producing sustainable food, archaeology, and cultural heritage and comprehensive healthcare at a reasonable cost.
