A delegation led by Ambassador Ragi El-Atrebi, Assistant Foreign Minister and Personal Representative of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to both the G20 and BRICS, will represent Egypt at this week's preparatory meetings for the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The summit is set to take place on November 18-19, 2024. Ambassador El-Atrebi, along with other personal representatives, will participate in discussions regarding the final communiqué anticipated to be issued at the summit's conclusion.
In his remarks, El-Atrebi emphasized that Egypt's involvement in the Rio summit will mark its fourth participation in G20 meetings since the group's establishment. This invitation, extended by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, highlights Egypt's increasing influence on both regional and global stages.
He noted that Egypt's role in the G20 signifies its commitment to advocating for the interests of developing nations, particularly those in the Arab and African regions, on significant economic and political matters.
He mentioned that it also reflects the strong historical connections between Egypt and Brazil, with both nations keen to enhance their bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
Although the G20 primarily addresses economic issues, El-Atrebi indicated that ongoing geopolitical conflicts, especially Israel's actions against Palestinian and Lebanese territories, are likely to be central topics of discussion at the summit. He underscored that the G20 acknowledges Egypt's persistent efforts to resolve the conflict and prevent its escalation.
The ambassador further stated that, in accordance with presidential directives, Egypt has been actively participating in G20 meetings this year, striving to optimize its national economic interests. Egypt's priorities have included fostering political will among G20 members to implement necessary measures that tackle the economic challenges confronting developing countries, particularly in the context of ongoing global crises.
