Egypt climbed to become the world’s 18th-largest economy and the second-largest in the Arab world in 2026, according to fresh estimates from the International Monetary Fund, underscoring the country’s accelerating economic momentum.

The latest IMF data highlights a notable expansion in Egypt’s gross domestic product, reflecting sustained growth across key sectors and a broader push to strengthen productive capacity. The ranking positions Egypt just behind Saudi Arabia, which leads the Arab world and ranks 16th globally, while United Arab Emirates follows in third place regionally. Algeria and Iraq complete the top five Arab economies.

Globally, the economic hierarchy remains dominated by major powers. China retains its position as the world’s largest economy with an estimated GDP of $43.5 trillion, followed by the United States at $31.8 trillion and India at approximately $19.1 trillion.

The IMF report also sheds light on regional dynamics, noting that Iraq’s economy reached a nominal GDP of $273.91 billion, with real growth estimated at 3.6%. Per capita GDP, based on purchasing power parity, stood at around $15,850, supported by a population of roughly 46.6 million.

Egypt’s improved ranking signals growing resilience in the face of global economic pressures, as policymakers continue to pursue structural reforms, attract investment, and expand infrastructure. Analysts view the country’s trajectory as a sign of strengthening fundamentals, though challenges tied to inflation, external financing, and currency stability remain key factors to watch.

As global competition intensifies, Egypt’s ascent in the IMF rankings marks a pivotal moment, reinforcing its position as a central economic force in the Middle East and North Africa.
