Egypt scored the fourth highest Travel & Tourism performance improvement in the World Economic Forum's latest Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report (TTCR), issued in September.

Globally, the Egyptian tourism sector jumped nine ranks, from the 74th to 65th place.

Surprisingly, Egypt leaped from the 65th place to fifth place in the tourism brand strategy, according to the report.

Egypt is a global leader in terms of cultural resources (22nd). The country is home to some of the world’s most famous landmarks, helping it rank 38th in terms of World Heritage cultural sites and fourth regarding cultural tourism online searches.

Nevertheless, it was Egypt’s improvements on natural resources (97th to 69th) that truly led to its overall improved TTCI score, with the attractiveness of its natural resources moving up 87 spots to 44th position.

"Since the last edition of the report, Egypt has had the second-highest safety and security improvement in the world," the report mentioned.

The country has long been regarded as a prime destination for nature-based activities, with Egypt’s price competitiveness, ranking 3rd, attracting tourists seeking inexpensive vacations.

There have also been efforts to build upon these strengths with greater prioritization of travel and tourism (37th to 31st) via increased government expenditure, making Egypt move from 22nd to 18th place.

Egypt benefited from score increases on 11 pillars out of 14 pillars, and scores on six of these pillars improved at or near double-digit rates.

In this context, Tourism Minister Dr. Rania Al-Mashat expressed her happiness for Egypt's success in the TTCI report, saying that it is a matter crowning Egypt's efforts to develop the tourism sector in light of Egypt-Tourism Reform Program (E-TRP) which aims to develop a unified vision for the sector in collaboration with the private sector.

Al-Mashat noted that Egypt's progress in the tourism brand strategy rank reflected the Tourism Ministry's efforts to change Egypt's stereotype image to be more modern and contemporary through modernizing the mechanisms of marketing and promotion globally.

The report also pointed to improvements in Egypt on environmental regulatory enforcement and stringency, occupying 98th, and the sustainability of tourism and travel development which ranked 53rd.

The report, covering 140 economies, measures the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the travel and tourism sector which in turn contributes to the development and competitiveness of a country.
