Egypt & S. Korea Discuss Cooperation, Developments in Gaza

Egypt's Foreign Ministry spokesman and Director of Public Diplomacy, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, announced that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry had a telephone conversation with his South Korean counterpart, Jo Tae-yul, on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.

Ambassador Abu Zeid reported that at the beginning of the call, Minister Shoukry congratulated Minister Jo Tae-yul on his new appointment and expressed eagerness to work together to strengthen relations between their countries. Both ministers highlighted the value of the comprehensive cooperative partnership between Egypt and South Korea, which has enhanced cooperation in various key sectors for both nations. They also expressed a desire to boost and elevate the level of coordination and consultation through bilateral consultation mechanisms.

The spokesperson added that the ministers discussed ways to enhance economic and investment cooperation, with Minister Shoukry emphasizing Egypt's interest in attracting more Korean investments, particularly in sectors where Korea has extensive expertise that meets Egypt's needs. Shoukry outlined the opportunities and incentives Egypt offers to bolster the investment climate.

Furthermore, Ambassador Abu Zeid noted that the ministers also talked about the positive cooperation in supporting each other's international nominations, with Minister Shoukry appreciating the ongoing mutual support and expressing his interest in its continuation.

During the call, Minister Shoukry also congratulated Minister Jo Tae-yul on South Korea's election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2024-2025. He praised the cooperation between the two countries within the United Nations framework and looked forward to ongoing coordination on Arab and African issues of priority on the Council's agenda.

The conversation also touched upon the security and humanitarian situation in Gaza and international efforts to end the war there. Minister Shoukry commended South Korea's stance in voting for the recent Arab resolution at the Security Council and its continued funding of UNRWA and support for international relief efforts. He expressed Egypt's reliance on South Korea's role in achieving a full ceasefire and the immediate delivery of urgent humanitarian aid.

In response, the South Korean Foreign Minister lauded Egypt's vigorous efforts to halt the war in Gaza and enhance the delivery of aid to the residents, affirming his country's ongoing support for efforts to restore peace and stability in the Middle East and prevent the conflict from escalating.
