Egypt’s Ministry of Transport announced on Friday a revision of ticket prices for national railway services and selected fare categories across Cairo’s metro network, citing mounting operational expenses and ongoing infrastructure investments as key drivers behind the decision.

In an official media statement, the ministry said the fare adjustments took effect starting Friday morning, March 27, 2026, as part of its policy of transparency and public engagement regarding services provided by its affiliated authorities and companies.

According to the statement, ticket prices for long-distance railway routes have increased by 12.5%, while fares on short-distance lines have risen by 25%. The ministry emphasized that the adjustments aim to support the financial sustainability of railway operations amid growing economic pressures.

The fare structure for Cairo Metro Lines 1, 2, and 3 has also been partially revised. Tickets covering up to 9 stations now cost 10 Egyptian pounds, up from 8 pounds. Journeys of up to 16 stations have increased to 12 pounds, compared with the previous fare of 10 pounds.

However, prices for longer journeys remain unchanged. Tickets for trips of up to 23 stations continue at 15 pounds, while fares for distances exceeding 23 stations and up to 39 stations remain fixed at 20 pounds.

The ministry encouraged commuters, particularly students and employees in both public and private sectors, to subscribe to monthly travel passes, noting that subscription systems offer significant discounts for frequent users of railway and metro services.

Officials attributed the fare adjustments to several economic factors affecting both the Egyptian National Railways Authority and the National Authority for Tunnels.
