Cairo and Doha have taken a significant step toward strengthening regional energy cooperation after Egypt and Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at expanding collaboration in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and broader energy sectors.

The agreement was signed in the Qatari capital, Doha, and focuses on enhancing cooperation in LNG sales and imports, alongside other energy-related activities. According to a statement issued by Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum on Sunday, the MoU is part of Cairo’s strategy to diversify natural gas supply sources and secure the country’s growing energy needs.

Egypt has increasingly turned to supply diversification as a cornerstone of its energy policy, seeking to balance domestic production growth with reliable external sources. The ministry noted that the agreement supports mechanisms for multi-source supply while contributing to added value for Egypt’s ambition to strengthen its position as a regional hub for gas trading and distribution.

The memorandum further reinforces the long-standing strategic energy partnership between Egypt and Qatar. QatarEnergy currently operates primarily in Egypt’s Mediterranean offshore areas, where it is active in six offshore blocks. The Qatari energy giant plans to inject new investments over the next five years, including drilling several exploratory wells in cooperation with major international energy companies.

In parallel with the MoU, the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and QatarEnergy signed the executive framework governing the delivery of Qatari LNG cargoes to Egypt. Under the agreement, shipments will be received at the Ain Sokhna and Damietta ports, in line with arrangements previously reached between the two sides.

The executive terms were signed by Mahmoud Abdel Hamid, Chairman of EGAS, representing the Egyptian side, and Abdullah Ahmed Al-Husseini, Executive Vice President for Marketing at QatarEnergy.
