Egypt is intensifying its preparations to host the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF) in November 2024, with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) playing a central role. The UN-Habitat team in Egypt is holding extensive meetings with ministries, relevant authorities, the private sector, universities, and development partners to ensure the success of this major event.

The 2024 World Urban Forum will emphasize the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on the local actions and initiatives needed to tackle current global challenges. This forum will serve as a crucial platform for discussing how cities can become engines of sustainable development through innovative, localized solutions.

Ahmed Rezk, the UN-Habitat representative in Egypt, highlighted that Egypt was chosen to host the 12th World Urban Forum because of its significant strides in housing and urban development. These efforts are closely aligned with Egypt’s dedication to the SDGs and its Vision 2030 development agenda. Rezk pointed out that UN-Habitat is working hand in hand with the Egyptian government, stakeholders, and the private sector to address issues related to housing and urban development. This collaboration has led to the creation of a Sustainable Urban Development and Housing Strategy, which provides a comprehensive approach to implementing and localizing the SDGs.

UN-Habitat's office in Egypt is instrumental in promoting sustainable urbanization. The office supports the design of cities that are economically productive, socially inclusive, and environmentally sustainable. By employing effective urban planning and financing mechanisms, cities can transform land and property values into revenue that funds essential urban services and sustainable growth. These processes are backed by appropriate legislation and robust institutions, ensuring the efficient execution of urban development initiatives.
