Eng. Magdy Zaher, Executive Director of the Manzala Lake in the three sectors of Port Said, Damietta, and Dakahlia, confirmed that the project to divert the Bahr El-Baqar route to the east of the branch of the Suez Canal is one of the giant projects established by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to raise the status of the Manzala Lake with the aim of reducing pollution.
Eng. Zaher pointed out that diverting the path of the Bahr al-Baqar drain, instead of pouring into Manzala Lake, is polluted, in addition to that the diverting path aims to develop fisheries and protect the environment.
Zaher said that the Bahr al-Baqar drain is one of the largest drains that flow into Manzala Lake, with a length of 190 km.
The Executive Director of Lake Manzala added that the drain is considered one of the most dangerous sources of environmental pollution in Egypt, and therefore the Bahr El-Baqar Drainage Diversion Station is the largest water treatment plant in the world for the Bahr El-Baqar Drainage Treatment Project, with the aim of benefiting from the agricultural drain water with 6 million cubic meters per day instead of dumping it in Lake Manzala and causing more pollution.
In the same context, Zaher confirmed that the water that was treated at the station is for the reclamation of 350,000 acres (feddans) in the Tina Plain, east of Port Said.
