The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the academic community are in mourning following the passing of Dr. Moufed Shehab, a towering figure in international law and a former government minister who died Sunday morning.

Dr. Moufed Shehab served in several high-ranking capacities, including Minister of Higher Education and Minister of Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Councils. However, he is perhaps most revered for his pivotal role as a lead legal expert in the committee that successfully secured the return of Taba to Egyptian sovereignty in 1989.

A Legacy of National Service

In an official statement, Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty expressed "deep sadness and profound sorrow" over the loss of a man described as "one of Egypt's most prominent legal scholars." The Ministry highlighted Dr. Shehab’s unwavering dedication to defending the Egyptian state’s interests on the global stage.

"Dr. Shehab dedicated his life and vast legal expertise to safeguarding our national sovereignty," the statement read. "His contributions were instrumental in the legal battle for Taba, working alongside Egypt’s top diplomats to reclaim every inch of our precious land."

Academic Excellence and Institutional Leadership

Beyond his political career, Dr. Shehab was a distinguished academic and a former President of Cairo University. Throughout his tenure, he was credited with shaping the minds of generations of legal scholars, judges, and researchers.

His relationship with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remained robust throughout his life, as he continued to provide counsel on complex international legal matters affecting Egypt’s national security.

Dr. Shehab's funeral is scheduled to take place at the Field Marshal Tantawy Mosque in New Cairo following the Asr prayer. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, academic brilliance, and unmatched patriotism.
