Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates, Badr Abdel Aaty, held a phone conversation with his Malian counterpart, Abdoulaye Diop, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance joint efforts to combat terrorism in the Sahel region, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said.
According to Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdel Aaty welcomed the growing momentum in relations between Egypt and Mali, underscoring the shared commitment of both countries to deepen cooperation and elevate ties to broader horizons.
The Egyptian foreign minister expressed Cairo’s interest in expanding economic, trade, and investment cooperation in line with Mali’s national development agenda.
He highlighted several priority sectors where Egyptian companies possess extensive expertise, including construction and infrastructure, electricity and renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural and food industries. These sectors, he noted, align closely with Mali’s development priorities and offer opportunities to advance mutual interests and serve the aspirations of both peoples.
Abdel Aaty also reviewed Egypt’s ongoing support programs aimed at countering terrorism and extremism, delivered through national institutions, Al-Azhar missions, and specialized training initiatives. These include programs offered by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s readiness to continue supporting Mali through the transfer of expertise accumulated under Egypt’s comprehensive approach to counterterrorism, which integrates security, development, and intellectual frameworks to address the root causes of extremism.
In the same context, the Egyptian foreign minister emphasized Egypt’s full support for regional and international efforts to eliminate terrorist organizations in Central and West Africa. He also stressed the importance of building the capacities of national institutions and personnel to combat terrorism while promoting sustainable development across the Sahel region.
The call concluded with both ministers reaffirming their commitment to enhancing cooperation and coordination across various fields, in a manner that supports security, stability, and development in Mali, the Sahel, and the African continent as a whole.
