In the wake of a cargo ship grounding near Quseir, the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, under the leadership of Minister Yasmine Fouad, has mobilized extensive resources to tackle the crisis and safeguard the Red Sea’s fragile ecosystem.

On November 25, the ministry reported a cargo vessel grounding that resulted in diesel spills and significant damage to nearby coral reefs. Despite determined efforts to stabilize the ship, severe weather and structural damage caused it to sink after developing multiple cracks and tilting to one side.

In a statement, Minister Fouad highlighted the swift response of a multidisciplinary crisis team. This team, comprising the Red Sea Reserves, the Environmental Affairs Agency, naval forces, the General Petroleum Authority, and PetroSafe Company, worked tirelessly to contain oil leaks, protect marine life, and shield coastal tourist zones from harm.

“We are prioritizing immediate containment and long-term restoration to mitigate the environmental impact and preserve this vital region for future generations,” Fouad said.

To prevent further pollution, teams have deployed absorbent barriers and heightened monitoring to ensure no oil reaches the shoreline. These measures are part of a coordinated effort to minimize damage and maintain the Red Sea’s natural beauty.

Additionally, Fouad announced an ambitious ecosystem restoration program for the Red Sea and South Sinai, beginning with Quseir. In partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Egypt, the initiative will involve continuous environmental monitoring, recovery assessments, and rehabilitation projects designed to restore the marine environment to its natural balance.

The minister emphasized the ministry’s commitment to environmental protection and public safety, stating, “This crisis underscores the importance of proactive measures and global partnerships to safeguard our precious ecosystems.”

As investigations into the incident continue, the ministry remains focused on collaboration and innovation to address the immediate challenges while building a sustainable future for the region.
