Egypt Eyes New Incentives for Rooftop Solar as Panel Prices Decline

Egypt’s House of Representatives discussed new mechanisms to expand the use of rooftop solar panels on residential buildings, as officials highlighted falling solar equipment prices and plans for additional incentives to encourage households to generate renewable electricity.

The discussions took place during a meeting of the Energy and Environment Committee chaired by Tarek El Molla, following questions raised by parliament member Zeinab Bashir regarding government support for residential solar energy adoption and electricity pricing mechanisms for households.

During the session, Ahmed Mohina, head of strategic planning and electricity performance monitoring at Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, said solar panel prices have declined significantly in recent months, improving the economic feasibility of expanding rooftop solar systems in the residential sector.

Mohina said the expansion of household solar energy projects has become a central pillar of Egypt’s broader strategy to transition toward cleaner energy sources.

He pointed to the “Shams Misr” initiative, which aims to finance and support the expansion of solar energy projects across the country, and called for additional partnerships involving the Ministry of Finance and civil society organizations to accelerate the spread of residential solar systems.

According to Mohina, the feed-in tariff offered for electricity generated through residential solar systems connected to the national grid is currently “very rewarding” for consumers, helping encourage more citizens to install solar stations on rooftops.

The discussions come as Egypt intensifies efforts to diversify its energy mix, reduce pressure on the national electricity grid, and expand renewable energy generation amid rising fuel costs and broader economic reform measures.

Officials have increasingly promoted rooftop solar systems as a way to lower household electricity bills while contributing to the country’s long-term sustainability and decarbonization goals.
