Egypt has expressed its sincere condolences to Spain over the victims of a train accident that occurred in the south of the country, resulting in a number of fatalities and injuries.
In a statement, Egypt affirmed its full solidarity with Spain during this painful time, extending its heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
The deadly crash occurred on Sunday evening in southern Spain when a high-speed Iryo train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed near the town of Adamuz in the Andalusia region.
After leaving the tracks, the train crossed onto an adjacent line and collided with an oncoming train, causing both to derail.
Authorities said at least 39 people were killed and more than 120 injured, including several in critical condition, making it Spain’s deadliest train accident in over a decade.
Spanish officials described the incident as highly unusual, noting that the derailment happened on a straight section of track that had been fully renovated and involved a train that was nearly new.
Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the circumstances were “extremely strange” and difficult to explain, adding that rail experts were surprised by the crash.
The last accident of comparable scale occurred in 2013, when 80 people died after a train derailed near Santiago de Compostela. Rescue teams worked through the night under challenging conditions as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
