Egypt is considering exporting electricity to Syria via Jordan, contingent on improved security and political stability in Damascus, according to Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat.

The announcement was made during the 15th Arab Ministers of Electricity Conference held in Cairo on Monday.

The minister explained that the electricity export would utilize the existing interconnection line between Egypt and Jordan, highlighting Egypt’s growing focus on energy partnerships with neighboring countries.

This comes as Egypt continues to recover from a recent energy crisis that led to scheduled power outages during the summer months.

Prolonged electricity cuts, lasting up to three hours daily in some areas, were attributed to natural gas shortages affecting power plant operations.

Egypt’s interest in regional power connectivity is not limited to Syria. Efforts to expand interconnection with Saudi Arabia are already underway, with a major project expected to be operational by mid-2025.

The initial capacity of the Egypt-Saudi Arabia interconnection will be 1,500 megawatts, eventually reaching a total capacity of 3,000 megawatts, as announced by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly in October.

Additionally, Egypt has signed a preliminary agreement with Greece to develop a massive undersea cable linking the two countries, further bolstering its regional energy influence.
