Egypt Discusses Localization of Railway Industry with Hungary's "Ganz-MÁVAG"

Kamel Al-Wazir, the Egyptian Minister of Transport, discussed with the head of the Hungarian "Ganz-MÁVAG" company, Shaba Toro (supplier for the contract of 1,350 railway cars of different models for the National Authority for Egyptian Railways), the schedule of supplying the deal's cars from Hungary.

The minister stressed the importance of adhering to technical standards in accordance with the terms of the contract, as well as discussing ways of joint manufacturing between the National Railway Industry Company (NERC) and "Ganz-MÁVAG", especially in the localization of the railway carriage industry, with a localization rate exceeding 90 percent, provided that the Payment in Egyptian pounds, paving the way for turning Egypt into a center for the manufacture of railway vehicles in the Middle East and Africa.

The Ministry of Transport stated that the meeting was held during the Minister of Transport's visit to Hungary, which started yesterday, and was attended by Egypt's Ambassador to Hungary, Mohamed El-Shennawy.

The Minister of Transport stressed the importance of this step, especially that it comes within the framework of the ministry's implementation of a comprehensive plan to establish a number of factories for the manufacture of mobile units in Egypt of all kinds, in accordance with international standards, through cooperation with major international specialized companies.

It is noteworthy that the deal comes within the framework of the agreement concluded between the Ministry of Transport represented by the Railways Authority and Ganz-MÁVAG" to manufacture and supply the rest of the remaining wagons out of a total deal of 1350 new railway wagons, which is considered the largest deal in the history of the Authority, and includes 850 air-conditioned wagons (500 An air-conditioned third class, which is offered to passengers for the first time in the history of the authority, and 50 air-conditioned third-class buffet cars, 180 luxury second-class cars, 90 luxury first-class cars and 30 air-conditioned buffet cars), in addition to 500 dynamically ventilated third-class cars.

The minister also inspected the company's factory in DunaKeszi, Hungary, which is dedicated to the production of railway carriages being supplied. The tour included the company's various production lines and the air-conditioned first and second class carriages currently being manufactured. Light of the plan to develop the railway car fleet.

He directed the minister to the company's factory in Szolnok, which is dedicated to the manufacture, maintenance and overhaul of railway cars that are supplied to the Hungarian railways.

The Minister of Transport stressed the necessity of working on manufacturing this type of wagons at National Egyptian Railway Industries Company (NERIC) factory in East Port Said, while working on exporting the wagons that will be produced at the NERIC factory abroad and manufacturing and supplying the railway needs of these wagons in order to save hard currency and achieve sustainable development for the Egyptian state.
