Egypt took a new step to reinforce its position as a regional energy hub, signing a memorandum of understanding with Italy’s Eni to renew its commitment to the North Port Said concession area.
The agreement, signed under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, reflects growing confidence between both sides and signals a renewed push to expand strategic cooperation in the country’s vital gas sector.
At the heart of the deal lies the North Port Said area, which includes the strategically important El-Gamil facilities, considered a central hub for processing gas from both current and future projects in the region.
Officials say the site plays a critical role in Egypt’s broader energy infrastructure, linking offshore production with domestic supply and export capabilities.
The memorandum, signed between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Eni, outlines the foundational principles for an upcoming work program and serves as a precursor to more detailed agreements expected in the near future.
These future deals are likely to define new investment commitments, particularly in exploration, development of undeveloped discoveries, and infrastructure expansion.
Speaking after the signing, Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi emphasized the importance of maintaining strong partnerships with international energy companies. He noted that the agreement reinforces Eni’s presence in the Port Said region and aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment.
The government has been working to create a more competitive and investor-friendly environment, aiming to accelerate exploration activities while maximizing output from existing fields.
The move comes at a time when Egypt is navigating economic challenges linked to global uncertainty and regional tensions. Strengthening the energy sector, particularly natural gas, remains a cornerstone of efforts to stabilize revenues, secure domestic supply, and enhance export potential.
With Eni already a key player in Egypt’s energy landscape, the renewed commitment underscores the country’s ambition to consolidate its role as a major gas processing and distribution hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.
