A massive fire and a series of explosions erupted at Higuerote Airport in Venezuela early Saturday, according to verified video footage reviewed by CNN. The footage shows large fireballs rising into the sky, with the blaze appearing to engulf what may be components of an air defense system inside the airport compound.
CNN reported that Higuerote Airport is the second Venezuelan airport to come under aerial attack in the early hours of Saturday, marking a significant escalation in security developments. Multiple explosions were also heard in the capital, Caracas, shortly before dawn, with power outages reported in several neighborhoods following the blasts.
The first explosion was recorded at approximately 1:50 a.m. local time. Osmary Hernández, CNN’s correspondent covering Eastern Europe, said one of the explosions was so powerful that it caused windows in nearby buildings to shake. Journalists in Caracas also reported hearing aircraft sounds in the sky after the explosions, adding to concerns over coordinated aerial activity.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement detailing the cause of the explosions or confirming casualties or damage at the airport. The situation remains unclear as investigations continue and emergency teams respond to the incident.
