Ecuador declared a state of emergency after the escape of one of the country’s most dangerous criminals from the prison while the cell guards were taken hostage after the eruption of various riots across the country, AFP reported on Tuesday.

On Monday, the authorities deployed thousands of soldiers to search for Adolfo Macías, the drug gang Los Choneros head.

He was reported missing on Sunday after he disappeared from the prison in the port city of Guayaquil. The criminal was set to be moved to a more secured prison before his escape.

President Daniel Noboad declared a 60-day state of emergency on Monday, saying: “Time is up for those convicted of drug trafficking, assassination and organized crime to tell the government what to do.”

He added: “We will not negotiate with terrorists and we will not rest until we have returned peace to Ecuadorians."
