A massive fire in a five-storey residential building in Old Dubai killed 16 people and injured nine others, the UAE newspaper reported on Sunday, citing the Dubai Civil Defense.
On Saturday, the report said the fire broke out on the fourth floor of a building in the Al Ras neighbourhood, which is home to the oldest market in Dubai and many of its workers and merchants.
A Dubai Civil Defense spokesman reported that preliminary investigations showed that the fire was caused by non-compliance with the building's safety requirements.
An investigation into the incident is underway.
