A petition calling for the impeachment of US President Donald Trump has received more than 100,000 signatures just days into his second term, according to Newsweek.
The support for Trump's impeachment underscores the country's deep political divisions and the backlash against his campaign and actions in the early days of his second term. Trump was impeached twice during his first term, but the Senate acquitted him both times.
According to Newsweek, the nonprofit organization "Free Speech for People" launched the petition on the day Trump returned to the White House. The campaign calls on Congress to launch an impeachment investigation into alleged violations of the emoluments clause, which prohibits the president from benefiting from the United States, individual states or foreign governments, his conduct, which the organization described as "illegal" and "corrupt" during his election campaign, and his pardon of those who participated in the storming of the Capitol.
The campaign added what it said were new grounds for investigating the impeachment based on other actions taken by Trump since returning to office, including his executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for some children born in the United States, and described Trump's dismissal of inspectors general and members of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the National Labor Relations Board as an illegal decision and an abuse of his power.
"Free Speech for People" is calling on Congress to launch an immediate impeachment inquiry to determine whether there are sufficient grounds to impeach Donald Trump for crimes that have already occurred and will continue in the coming days.
On the other hand, Republicans have praised and defended Trump’s actions since returning to office. However, some have said they do not support pardoning those convicted of violent crimes in the January 6 Capitol riot.
The effort to impeach Trump for a third time is unlikely to advance while Republicans retain control of both the House and Senate, but Democrats could push to impeach Trump again if they flip the House in the 2026 midterm elections.
