On September 11th, Austrian Dominic Thiem, the world No. 3, defeated his rival, the world No. 5, Daniel Medvedev, in straight sets to reach the US Open tennis final.
Thiem, 27-year-old, had an impressive game with Medvedev; the second seed beat the third seed 6-2, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/5) in 2hr 56min paving his way to the finals.
After losing to Rafael Nadal at the French Open two years ago, and to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open this February, Thiem expressed his endless happiness as he is the first Austrian in the history to make it through the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows.
"I love these big matches, even more when there's a full stadium, but it's also great in front of many TV spectators. To face the best guys in the world, that's what I do the hard work for all the time at home and in the off season,'' the player continued. "After the first set, it was great tennis from both of us. I could have easily been down two-sets-to-one. I'm really happy to be through. It was a great semi-final."
The 27-year-old player, who battled through injury to beat Medvedev, had appeared to be in pain towards the end of the tiebreak and required treatment on his Achilles before the third set. He endured the pain to complete the game successfully. Medvedev complimented the Austrian player saying, “He played like a real champion.”
After this win, the solid player is now in his 4th Grand Slam final and his 2nd hard-court final. He will be playing Alexander Zverev, who also made his first ever Grand Slam final.
He expressed his enthusiasm about the next game with Zverev,
“I'm really looking forward to that. We have such a great friendship and rivalry,” he said. “It's amazing that we're going to face each other in a Grand Slam final."
After all, we hope that he will finally win his first Major on the 13th of September.
