Indonesia's authorities announced that the death toll from the earthquake that hit the island of Java, Monday, has risen to 162.
West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said: "I regret to announce that 162 people have been killed," which was confirmed by a spokesman for the local administration in the city of Cianjur in West Java.
Herman Suherman, the regent of Cianjur Regency in West Java, told Indonesian TV Kompas at around 4 p.m. Jakarta time that about 700 were wounded.
The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency said on Twitter that it had also measured the quake with a magnitude of 5.6. Preliminary data from the US Geological Survey previously put the quake at a magnitude of 5.4.
The US Geological Survey noted that the quake occurred at a depth of about 10 km and its epicenter was about 18 km southwest of Serangang-hillir, Indonesia.
Indonesian local media showed several buildings in Cianjur with their roofs collapsed. The country's meteorological agency warned residents near the quake to watch out for more tremors.
