The death toll from severe floods in Bangladesh and northeastern India has risen to 59.

On Sonday, June 19, "Sky News" reported that the flood waters inundated millions of homes and that storms killed at least 21 people in Bangladesh, while floods, lightning strikes, and landslides killed 38 people in India.

It added that although Bangladesh experiences regular floods, experts say climate change is increasing their frequency, ferocity, and unpredictability.

Water levels in all major rivers across Bangladesh are rising, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre in Dhaka, the country's capital.

On its part, the disaster management agency in the Indian state of "Assam" said that the floodwaters have inundated the homes of nearly two million people since last Thursday.

The waters of the Brahmaputra River - one of the largest rivers in Asia - breached its mud dams and inundated 3,000 villages, as well as farmland in 28 out of the 33 districts of Assam state.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted yesterday that he "prays for the safety of those affected by the floods."

In turn, the Prime Minister of the Indian state of "Meghalaya" Conrad Sangma said that the authorities are inspecting the damage caused by landslides in the northeastern state.
