A tram derailed and crashed on Viale Vittorio Veneto in Milan, Italy, leaving at least two people dead and 40 others injured, local authorities said.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly after the accident, securing the area and assisting passengers trapped inside the damaged tram. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with several reported to be in serious condition.
One passenger on the tram and another on the street were killed, with none of the other injured in a life-threatening condition.

Officials have opened an investigation into the cause of the derailment. Preliminary reports indicate the tram veered off the tracks along the busy central avenue before coming to a halt.
City authorities expressed condolences to the families of the victims and said efforts are focused on providing medical care to the injured and restoring normal traffic flow in the area.
