Medal contenders rose to the occasion on Day 10 of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, as standout performances in freestyle skiing, short track speed skating, figure skating and ski jumping added fresh drama to the Games, Xinhua reported.
In women’s freestyle skiing big air, China’s Gu Ailing secured her second silver medal of the Games with a score of 179.00 points. Gu, returning to major big air competition after her breakthrough Olympic success four years ago, delivered a composed performance but finished 1.75 points behind Canada’s Megan Oldham, who captured gold.
Short track speed skating saw the Netherlands continue its strong showing, with Xandra Velzeboer powering to her second gold medal of the Games in the women’s 1,000 meters. Velzeboer controlled the race from the front, reinforcing her dominance in the discipline this season.
In the men’s 5,000-meter relay semifinals, China briefly surged into contention before a late slip dashed its hopes of advancing to the medal round. Canada and Italy capitalized on the mistake to secure spots in Final A.
Pairs figure skating produced a notable comeback as Japan’s Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara rebounded from a disappointing short program to win gold with a total score of 231.24 points, highlighted by the highest free skate mark of the competition. China’s former Olympic champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong climbed one position from the short program to finish fifth overall.
Elsewhere, American bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor captured gold in the women’s monobob, while Austria claimed the inaugural men’s ski jumping super team title with a commanding performance.
As the Games enter their final stretch, tight margins and comeback victories continue to define competition in northern Italy, with athletes pushing the limits in pursuit of Olympic glory.
