Authorities in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region in Russia's North Caucasus, have temporarily banned the wearing of the niqab following recent terrorist attacks that targeted Christian and Jewish places of worship, resulting in 22 fatalities last month.

The Council of Muftis in Dagestan announced the temporary ban on Wednesday via Telegram, stating that it was implemented at the request of the Russian Ministry of Religious Affairs. This decision follows reports that one of the individuals involved in the June 23rd attacks attempted to escape by wearing a niqab.

The Council, representing the Muslim community in Dagestan, declared that the ban would remain in effect "until the threats are eliminated and a new fatwa is issued."

Dagestan has faced significant challenges with terrorism and religious extremism in recent years. The region's complex socio-political landscape, combined with its diverse ethnic and religious makeup, has made it a hotspot for such activities. The recent attacks on Christian and Jewish worship places have intensified security concerns and prompted immediate preventive measures.
