The Orthodox Church in Egypt commented on the case of former priest Zakaria Boutros, which sparked controversy on social media, noting that he had been dismissed from the church for more than 18 years.

The church clarified in a statement that "Zakaria Boutros was a priest in Egypt and was transferred between several churches, and he presented an education that does not comply with the Orthodox faith, so he was suspended for a period, then he apologized and was transferred to Australia and then the United Kingdom, where he taught a non-Orthodox education as well."

It continued: "He then went to the United States and hosted some of his meetings at home and in hotels, and the Diocese of Los Angeles warned its people not to host him at the time."

It added that "the former priest submitted a request to settle his pension from working in the priesthood and accepted the request of His Holiness Pope Shenouda III on January 11, 2003, and since that time he is no longer affiliated with the Coptic Orthodox Church or does any work for it."

"On our part, we reject the methods of abuse and defamation because they are not compatible with the true Christian spirit, and we preserve our love and full respect for all our Muslim brothers."

The hashtag "Punish Zakaria Boutros" was issued on "Twitter", to express anger at Boutros after his insulting statements to the Prophet Mohamed.

According to the "Sada El-Balad" website, Boutros appeared through one of the religious channels, attacking the Prophet, as he believed in his own words that 'Muslims discover daily mistakes for the Prophet'.
