Egypt's geography and human activities contribute to worsen air pollution, says CAPMAS

The Physical Geography of Egypt is one of the main reasons for the high levels of air pollutants, according to a report issued ahead of COP27 by Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) in March.

In the report, CAPMAS attributes the presence of these high concentrations of particulate matter and pollutants in the air to human activities and natural factors.

It noted that Egypt is located within three of the world’s largest desert regions, which is one of the causes of the high percentage of air pollutants in all countries of the region. “In Egypt, the desert is responsible for a large percentage of the detected particles.”

In addition to Egypt's Physical Geography, CAMPAS' report referred to a number of activities that contribute the air pollution and climate change like burning rice straw, open-air waste-burning, industrial activities, transportation (car exhaust), and coal.

Another significant source of the dust and small particles is windblown from arid areas in the tropics and the the North Pole, the report points out.

Carbon monoxide (CO) has increased in streets and narrow quarters, due to the excess amount of cars' exhaust which affects the health of citizens, said CAPMAS.

It also showed that the number of vehicles licensed in Egypt through the end of 2021 reached 10.9 million compared to 6.6 in 2012, with an increase of 65.2%.
