COP27: UNICEF Participates in Panel Discussion on “Climate Change-Human Mobility Nexus"

On Thursday, Jeremy Hopkins, UNICEF Representative in Egypt, participated as a speaker in the panel discussion entitled “The Climate Change-Human mobility nexus: Addressing protection risks in the context of climate change”.

The panel discussion was led by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Egypt in collaboration with the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TiP).

The event that took place in Sharm El Sheikh coastal city on the sidelines of COP27, focused on Human mobility in the context of climate change with the increasing evidence that environmental degradation and climate change could induce high-risk human mobility. It also focused on the possible solutions with the aim of identifying feasible and effective actions to be taken to protect affected communities, especially the most vulnerable.

In his address, Hopkins said: “We are working together to ensure that safe migration is an option for children and families affected by climate change and to engage young migrants by giving them a seat at the table in the climate change process”.

The session was attended by Ambassador Naela Gabr, Chairperson of the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons in Egypt, Ambassador Neveen El-Husseiny, Deputy Assistant Minister for Migration, Refugees and Combatting Human Trafficking, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Egypt, Mr. Carlos Oliver, IOM Chief of Mission in Egypt, Ms. Rania Ahmed IFRC Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa and was moderated by Mr. Manuel Pereira, Migration, Environment Climate Change and Risk Reduction Head of Division.
