In an unexpected development that confused thousands of users, the AI-powered chatbot model “Claude” experienced a widespread outage on Monday, March 2, 2026.
The disruption caused noticeable service interruptions across multiple platforms, including web browsers, mobile applications, and APIs.
The model, developed by Anthropic, suffered a partial outage that affected the main application, the desktop program, and the public API. Users and developers reported difficulties accessing the service or using it normally.
Data from Downdetector, which monitors digital service disruptions through user reports, showed a sharp spike in complaints related to “Claude.”
Reports came from several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Reported issues ranged from failed chat session loading and general login error messages to API responses returning “500 errors,” which typically indicate server-side problems rather than issues with users’ devices or internet connections.
In its first official statement, Anthropic announced on its service status page that it had identified the disruption and begun investigating the cause.
In a subsequent update, the company said, “The root cause has been identified and a fix is being implemented.”
The company also noted that some API methods were not functioning properly and confirmed that technical teams were continuing to work on resolving the issue. However, no clear timeline was provided for a full restoration of service.
The outage affected a broad range of users, from individuals relying on Claude for everyday conversations to developers integrating the model into applications and technical projects via APIs.
Among the additional issues reported were difficulties launching the desktop application for some Windows users, along with timeouts and incomplete requests, reinforcing the impression of a significant internal technical malfunction.
As of now, the precise technical cause of the outage has not been disclosed in detail, though the company maintains that repair efforts are ongoing.
