China will cut tariffs on imports of ethane and some recycled copper and aluminum raw materials starting next year, the government said on Saturday.

The Ministry of Finance announced adjustments to some different tariff categories starting from Jan. 1, 2025, to boost imports of high-quality products, expand domestic demand and promote high-level opening-up.

The ministry said temporary import tariffs below most-favored-nation rates will apply to 935 items, while tariffs on ethane and some recycled copper and aluminum raw materials will be reduced to promote environmentally friendly and low-carbon development.

China decided to raise import tariffs on some goods such as molasses and pre-mixed powders containing sugar, while tariffs on items such as cycloolefin polymers, ethylene-vinyl alcohol polymers and automatic transmissions for special-purpose vehicles such as fire fighting vehicles and repair vehicles will be reduced.

Tariffs will also be cut on items such as sodium zirconium cyclosilicate, viral vectors for T-cell therapy and nickel-titanium alloy wires for organ transplants. The China-Maldives free trade agreement will come into effect on Jan. 1, with the tariff cuts in place, the ministry said.
